Most online converters work the same way: you upload a file, a server converts it, and you download the result. That means your image sits on someone else's machine, at least briefly, and often longer than you would like. ImageXpo converts formats using WebAssembly running inside your own browser, so nothing is transmitted anywhere.
Which format should you convert to?
Choose JPG when the file has to open everywhere — email, print shops, older software, government portals. It is the lowest common denominator of digital imaging and nothing rejects it.
Choose PNG when you need transparency, or when the image contains text, diagrams or hard edges. PNG is lossless, so the file stops degrading every time you save it.
Choose WebP for websites. It is roughly 30% smaller than JPG at the same visible quality, supports transparency, and every current browser displays it.
Choose AVIF when page speed matters most. It reaches roughly half the size of JPG, but support outside the browser is thin — pair it with a WebP fallback.
Choose BMP only when a machine demands it. CNC controllers, label printers, embroidery machines and embedded panels often accept nothing else.
What conversion cannot do
Converting a file does not improve it. If a JPG has already lost detail to compression, saving it as PNG or BMP preserves the damage at a larger file size — it does not undo it. Convert once, from the best original you have, and work from that.

Are my images uploaded when I convert them?
No. Conversion runs through WebAssembly inside your browser, so the file never leaves your device. There is no server copy, no retention period and no account to create.
Which format is best for a website?
WebP for broad safety, AVIF if you can add a fallback. WebP is about 30% smaller than JPG at the same visible quality and every current browser supports it. AVIF is smaller still but not universally supported outside browsers.
Will converting improve my image quality?
No. Detail discarded by an earlier compression cannot be recovered. Converting a damaged JPG to PNG stores the damage losslessly at a much larger size. Always convert from the best original available.
Is there a file size or quantity limit?
No. Because the work happens on your own hardware rather than on our servers, there is nothing for us to meter. The practical limit is your device memory.
